My husband and I visited Kyoto in July 2019, timing our trip with the Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's most famous festivals. Even in the summer heat, Kyoto was unforgettable — a city where centuries-old temples, quiet gardens, and traditional wooden streets sit right alongside modern life.
Kyoto is Japan at its most timeless. It offers a gentler, more contemplative pace than Tokyo, with more than a thousand temples and shrines, beautifully preserved historic districts, and a deep sense of tradition in everything from tea ceremonies to seasonal cuisine. If you want to truly feel Japanese culture rather than just see it, Kyoto is the place.
Kyoto is a wonderful fit for couples, retirees, solo travelers, history lovers, and multi-generational families. It can be a weaker match for families with very young children, as much of the experience centers on temples, gardens, and quiet observation. One note for picky eaters: Kyoto cuisine leans heavily on seafood, though there are always alternatives to be found.
